SANTA MONICA, Calif. � California police say the former host of a Food Network show is accused of soliciting homeless people to commit a murder.

Santa Monica police Sgt. Jay Trisler says Juan-Carlos Cruz was arrested Thursday and booked on suspicion of solicitation to commit murder.

Cruz was the host of the Food Network program "Calorie Commando" in 2004 and has spoken about low-calorie cooking at health fairs.

Trisler says officers were contacted on May 7 by homeless individuals who were solicited by Cruz to kill someone. The people who were solicited then agreed to help police in the investigation.

Trisler says the intended victim has been notified.

Cruz is being held on $5 million bail.

Juan-Carlos Cruz (born Unknown) is a celebrity chef on the Food Network. He hosts Calorie Commando and Take It Off (now titled Weighing In) on the network. Juan-Carlos lost 43 pounds on a Discovery Health show called Discovery Health Body Challenge, which made him change directions from being a pastry chef to do low-calorie cooking.

Cruz graduated in 1993 from the California Culinary Academy. In 1994 he started working at the Stanford Park Hotel, as a pastry chef. In 1996 he started as pastry sous-chef at the Hotel Bel Air. While at the Bel Air he created pastries for celebrities Gary Oldman, Jack Nicholson, Nancy Reagan, Will Smith, Oprah Winfrey, Jim Carrey, Joe Namath, Prince Philip, Julia Roberts and Russell Crowe, among others.[citation needed]

In 2001 he started his website Pastrydude.com.

On May 14th, 2010 he was arrested in Santa Monica, CA for soliciting a homeless person to commit a homicide in his behalf. [1]
